Paper Plane: A Small Space with Big Style

A Residence Design by Hsiang-Chen Lu

Inspired by the art of paper folding and the image of a soaring paper plane, Hsiang-Chen Lu has created a home of hope that symbolizes a greater future. This unique residence combines semi-industrial elegance with multi-functional spatial design, showcasing the possibility of "small space, big style." With a gentle color palette and warm, vibrant color blocks as decoration, the space exudes a sense of warmth and vitality. The use of various wooden and stone materials creates an organic atmosphere, adding to the overall charm of the design.

One of the standout features of this design is the clever utilization of vertical space. While higher spaces, such as the entrance ceiling, are often overlooked, Lu has transformed them into vertical extra-storage rooms, ensuring that the small house remains tidy and neat. In addition, the challenge of accommodating a dining table, living room, study, and exercise space within a 16 square meter public area has been ingeniously addressed. Folding hidden tables have been incorporated to create a flexible dining and exercise area, maximizing the functionality of the space.

By overlapping two functional spaces and dividing their usage based on time and situation, the overall space utilization has been significantly improved. The design seamlessly guides residents through the space, defining how each area is used, based on time and situation. This thoughtful approach ensures that every inch of the 43 square meter project is optimized.

Throughout the design process, sustainability was a key consideration. The use of eco-friendly plywood, graded by the national standard of formaldehyde emission, minimizes waste and dust on-site. Additionally, the modular nature of the design allows for easy disassembly and reinstallation, reducing potential waste in the future.

Hsiang-Chen Lu's design for Paper Plane overcame the challenges posed by limited space through vertical development and flexible public space utilization. By eschewing traditional partitions and employing strategic material choices, furniture placement, and multi-functional design, the space is intuitively divided into distinct areas. The result is a harmonious and functional living space that defies its small footprint.

Paper Plane has been recognized for its outstanding design with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. Hsiang-Chen Lu's design exemplifies these qualities, making Paper Plane a truly remarkable residence.
